The tradition of decapitating a bottle of champagne with a sabre originated in the age of Napoleon. The sabrage with the Briquet sabre was initiated by the general himself in 1812 after a battle had been won. This unique custom has survived to this day, and not only in France. It provides a special highlight at every festive occasion. When used correctly, it usually works without any problems. Once the wire basket has been removed from the cork, the blade of the sabre is struck with a sensitive movement along the neck of the bottle on the thickening below the bottle top.
